Promoted to cathedral status when the Diocese of Ottawa is created in 1847, the mission church is still unfinished, with its two towers rising only as far as the roof, and the whole interior remaining to be completed. It will take more than forty years before the sanctuary and the nave are ornamented. In 1990, the Government of Canada designates Ottawa’s Notre-Dame Cathedral as a national historic site.
